Keeping Your Kids Healthy

Kids are natural germ magnets. It can be a challenge to keep them healthy during the best of times, let alone during a pandemic. If you are a parent with young children, the following tips can help you keep your kids healthy, whether they are attending school or sheltering in place at home.

Serve Healthy Meals and Snacks

Good nutrition is the bedrock for good health. Offer plenty of protein, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products for calcium. Try to stay away from sugar and processed foods.

Keep Them Current On Vaccinations

Vaccines can protect your children from disease. No one likes to get poked in the arm with a needle, but it is far better than suffering from measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough, or influenza.

Give Them Probiotics Daily

Probiotics are healthy bacteria that are particularly good for digestive health. Recent research has found a possible link between probiotics and a stronger immune system. A healthier gut means a healthier body overall.

Make Sure They Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep-deprived children and adults are more susceptible to bacteria, viruses, and illness. Our bodies restore and repair themselves while we sleep. Children need more sleep than adults, and the younger they are, the more rest they need. Depending on age, their sleep requirements can range from nine to 14 hours a night.

Have Them Wash Their Hands Frequently

Proper handwashing can help keep your children well. Have them scrub with soap and warm water when they come in from outside, after using the bathroom, and before they eat. Hand sanitizer is no substitute for handwashing. It should only be used when it is impossible for your kids to wash their hands.

Have Them Wear a Mask In Public

Masks have become essential accessories when we go to a store, a park, or anywhere around other people. Wearing a mask provides some protection from airborne viruses and bacteria. It can also help protect other people if you are carrying a contagious disease and unaware of it.

Teach Them to Avoid Sharing Germs

Children should not share spoons, cups, straws, hats, play lip gloss, or anything that comes in contact with the head, mouth, or face. When your kids get sick, keep them at home and away from other people.

Get Them Outdoors for Some Exercise

Kids need regular exercise to get their hearts pumping, boost their immune systems, and elevate their mood. Spending time outdoors is good for kids. Outside play helps sharpen their skills and increases fitness. Children who are physically active become healthy adults.

Help Your Kids Stay Positive

Children are naturally more alive, enthusiastic, and energetic than adults. Try to promote a positive state of mind. Elevated stress hormones decrease immunity. Studies have shown that poor emotional health can weaken the immune system and lead to illness.

Take Them for Regular Checkups

It is more important now than ever for kids to visit their pediatrician on a regular basis. If your child is due for a checkup, don’t put it off. Speak with our friendly agent if you need help finding a health insurance plan for your family.
