Spirit Dental offers two main plans to choose from and uses the Ameritas Classic PPO network, one of the largest networks in the nation, with over 428,000 access points and 111, 500 unique providers:
Network:
The Spirit Dental Network plans feature a network of participating dentists. On this specific plan, you want to ensure the dentist you plan to see is in the network, so that you get the best coverage and rates. Should you attempt to see an out-of-network dentist, be prepared to face decreased benefits and higher fees. The plans you can choose from are:
- Network 750/1000/1250
- Network 1200
- Network 1200/2500/5000
- Network 3500
Rates in the San Antonio, Texas area for a single individual start at $27.60 a month, for a couple start at $55.20 a month, and for a family, start at $88.31 a month for the Network plans.
Choice:
The Spirit Dental Choice plans are a fee-for-service structure, whereby you can visit any dentist of your choice. You will not be tied down to the Ameritas network with these plans. Reimbursements for any dental services that you will receive may vary, but you can expect that your insurance will typically cover anywhere from 50%-100% of usual and customary expenses.
The plans you can choose from are:
- Choice 750/1000/1250
- Choice 1200
- Choice 1200/2500/5000
- Choice 3500
Rates in the San Antonio, Texas area for a single individual start at $41.94 a month, for a couple start at $83.88 a month, and for a family, start at $134.21 a month for the Choice plans.
Coverage:
All Spirit Dental insurance plans cover preventive services at 100%, which includes two exams and three cleanings per year. Basic services consists of basic fillings, space maintainers, one series of bitewing x-rays per year, sealants for children under age 16, and one topical fluoride per year for children under age 16. Major services consists of simple extractions, implants, one diagnostic x-ray (full or panoramic in any three year period), oral surgery, endodontic treatment, periodontic services, restoration services (inlays, onlays, and crowns), prosthetic services (bridges and dentures). Coverage amounts per year vary for basic and major services, dependent on the plan you choose.
The $100 lifetime deductible applies to all services above, per person.
Optional Vision Add-On:
When you buy a Spirit Dental insurance plan, you have the option to add optional vision coverage at a discounted rate of $7 per person, $14 for a couple, or $20 for a family (rates for San Antonio, Texas area). For this extra premium, you get one routine eye examination every year (subject to a $10 deductible), and coverage for eyeglasses, lenses, frames, and contact lenses (subject to a $50 lifetime deductible).
This add-on vision coverage through Spirit Dental utilizes the EyeMed Access network.

You can pay for your plan with either a checking/savings account or credit card. You rate is locked in for a year and you can also cancel at any time. It will take 2-3 business days for your enrollment to be accessible in the dental carrier’s system and 10 business days to receive your ID card and policy certificate of coverage in the mail.
